La masure (The Old Cottage)
1879
Not on view
In the 1880 Impressionist exhibition, Pissarro showed three impressions of his aquatint The Old Cottage representing progressive states (stages of development) of his plate. In daring to exhibit multiple states, Pissarro offered an ingenious response to Baudelaire's often-quoted reflection that "a harmoniously-conducted picture consists of a series of pictures superimposed on one another, each layer conferring greater reality on the dream."
