La clownesse assise (Mademoiselle Cha-U-Kao) (The Seated Clown, [Mademoiselle Cha-U-Kao]), from the series Elles
Not on view
The subject of this print is the clownesse from the Moulin Rouge who had changed her name from "Chahut-Chaos" (a description of her acrobatic dancing act) to the more "Oriental," and therefore more fashionable, "Cha-U-Kao." Sitting with her black-clad legs akimbo, elbows resting on her thighs, she is posed like an acrobat, wrestler, or actor in a Japanese color woodcut. Also, she occupies a space ruled by Japanese perspective, the floor tilted up and the background simply defined by bands of color.
