Dextra Quotskuyva Nampeyo was a skilled and innovative potter. She learned from her mother, Rachel Namingha Nampeyo, who was Annie Healing’s daughter. Dextra started her practice by following family designs, even painting her mother’s pots when Rachel could no longer do so, just as her grandmother Annie Healing had done for her mother Nampeyo. Later, Dextra used family designs like feather and cloud motifs but adapted them to her own striking style, experimenting with form, technique, and design. This pot is an excellent example of this innovation. Dextra updated the classic seed jar form by adding a gently sloping lacuna to its mouth; an interpretation of the classic break in the spirit line. In addition to the painted design, she used the different firing colors of the clay as a decorative element to enhance the form of the pot. Rather than slip and burnish the jar, she used sandpaper to smooth it, creating a velvety finish. Dextra passed along Nampeyo’s legacy, teaching her children and her siblings’ children the family style of pottery.
