Jan Lutma, Goldsmith
1656
Not on view
Rembrandt's print portrays the goldsmith and collector Jan Lutma half lost in shadow as he leans back in his chair, clutching an object of his creation. On the table are several tools of his trade, a hammer, and a cup containing metal punches. In an earlier state of the etching, the background was a wall. When Rembrandt transformed it into a window, he neglected to remove a nail that now protrudes from a pane of glass.
