Jan Lievens, from The Iconography
ca. 1632
Not on view
Anthony van Dyck made an oil sketch of the young artist Jan Lievens when Van Dyck was in The Hague painting at the court of the stadtholder during the early 1630s. It was in this same setting that Constantijn Huygens took note of Lievens and Rembrandt: "I venture to suggest offhand that Rembrandt is superior to Lievens in his sure touch and liveliness of emotions. Conversely, Lievens is the greater in inventiveness and audacious themes and forms."
