Iemon and the Ghost of His Wife, Oiwa (Iemon nyobo Oiwa), from the series One Hundred Ghost Stories (Hyaku monogatari)
1832
Not on view
This print brings to life a ghost story made into a popular kabuki play beginning in 1825, which was then made popular as an ukiyo-e print. The ghost of Oiwa appears to her former husband, Iemon, in the form of a traditional Japanese lantern. The droop visible in her left eye refers to the disfiguring poison that Iemon gave her, which led to her death. Desiring vengeance for her murder, Oiwa's spirit ignites the lantern.
