1860
Artwork Viewer
After Yokohama opened its port to trade in the summer of 1859, the once-sleepy fishing village was inundated with foreign traders who became popular subjects for Edo-based printmakers. Wearing stylized garb, this trio clutches objects associated with their native lands — a pipe for the Dutchman, a glass of spirits for the Englishman, and a telescope for the American.
