This print offers a humorous example of Hiroshige's sophisticated treatment of the diagonal, in which elements go across and off the sheet. Here, the ferryman's hairy arms and leg and the steering pole define the foreground, inviting the eye to explore the world beyond. The view constructed by Hiroshige's close cropping is similar to one that residents of Edo would have experienced when traveling along Edo's waterways; the edge of the parasol in the lower right corner suggests one such traveler.
