Green
Not on view
For this, his largest and most famous print, Richard Diebenkorn envisioned a central green field composed of both aquatint and spit-bite aquatint. Because spit-bite tints are relatively light, a third plate printed in smooth green aquatint was added as a background tone to help achieve the deep green color the artist desired. Applying green inks to the central area using the traditional method practiced at Crown Point Press (wiping with a stiff cotton tarlatan pad, then with the palm of hand) proved challenging to the printers because the area was so large. Consequently, impressions of Green appear slightly different from one another, most notably in the center of the green field. Such idiosyncrasies reinforce the handmade origins of the print.
