Golden Gate, from the portfolio Soft Edge—Hard Edge
1965
Not on view
An accomplished printmaker, Albers worked for the first time in screenprint in 1961. His first prints were reflections and extensions of his larger works on canvas, the Homage to the Square series begun in 1949. Working in the screenprint studios of Ives-Sillman in New Haven, Albers and his superb team of printers produced works of unusually high quality, giving the medium a new direction. In the catalogue for the 1973 Brooklyn Museum retrospective of Albers's prints, curator Jo Miller credited Albers with revitalizing the screenprint during the early 1960s.
