Gedenkblatt für Karl Liebknecht (Memorial for Karl Liebknecht)
1919–1920
Not on view
Käthe Kollwitz was drawn to the woodcut medium for its accessibility and reproducibility. In her memorial for socialist and anti-militarist German leader Karl Liebknecht (1871–1919), she organized this scene to resemble a lamentation, traditionally used to depict mourners over the body of Christ. The artist’s association of the assassinated political leader with Christ thus takes on political resonance.
