Flagon
1874
This pair of sterling silver flagons was presented as a wedding gift to Josephine Hilton from Cornelia Clinch Stewart, the widow of New York department store tycoon A. T. Stewart. Mrs. Stewart's gift reflects the taste of wealthy New Yorkers during the Gilded Age. The Islamic-inspired design of these Persian-style flagons reflects Orientalism—the fascination with cultures of the Middle and Far East in an era of expanding international empires and trade.
