Figure
Expressively depicting a protective spirit, this shrine figure consists of two bodies and seven heads, each gazing in a different direction. Contributing to the figure's impact are its impressive size, its high color contrast, its bold sculptural massing, the exaggeration and simplification of its forms, and the arresting use of inlaid mirrors for eyes. The entire figure is painted in contrasting colors: dark colors signify strength, whites denote status as a titled member of a warrior society. Four arms hold various weapons. The medicine bottle depicted on the breast of one body emphasizes male power. This multi-headed sculpture was probably once placed inside an interior shrine, a sacred space approached by warriors before they set off to hunt or fight. This type of figure would have helped protect villages from enemies, hostile spirits, or perhaps even disease.
