evening ensemble: coat, dress, and slip
Not on view
Kaisik Wong’s visionary designs were inspired by myriad sources, including the Bay Area counter culture movement, religious mysticism, and global textile traditions, particularly from South America and Asia. Wong made most of his clothing by hand, cutting materials free form with scissors to achieve amorphous shapes, and layering materials to create fluid garments that played with traditional constructs of gender and ethnic identity. After briefly working under his own label, Muuntux, in the early 1970s, Wong produced one-of-a-kind designs for the San Francisco art-to-wear boutique Obiko and the luxury department stores I. Magnin & Company and Henri Bendel. His garments were worn by renowned performers, such as Tina Turner, as well as Bay Area style arbiters like Dodie Rosekrans, to whom this ensemble belonged.
