evening ensemble: blouse and skirt
Not on view
This ensemble as well as the adjacent one hails from Yves Saint Laurent’s revolutionary Opéras – Ballets Russes collection, which drew inspiration from an early twentieth-century Russian ballet company and the imperial clothing styles of Tsarist Russia. The collection manifests “Orientalism,” in which Western perceptions of Asian cultures are filtered through the lens of colonialism and othering. Upon its debut, it garnered attention for its vivid colors, luxurious textiles, and lavish trimmings during a time when informal, pared-down street styles were highly popular in Europe and the United States. Decades later, the collection remains a watershed moment in fashion history, often credited with restoring interest in French haute couture after a period of decline in the 1960s.
