Most of Rembrandt's later etched portraits represent prominent members of society. Ephraim Bueno was a leader in Amsterdam's community of Portuguese Jews who provided funding to the Hebrew press of Rabbi Menasseh ben Israel, a mutual acquaintance of Rembrandt's who may have provided their introduction. The portrait's format, with the doctor resting his hand on the banister of an unseen staircase, does not derive from Anthony van Dyck's ubiquitous prototypes, but appears to be Rembrandt's invention.
