Edmond de Goncourt
1882
Not on view
In the fifth Impressionist exhibition (1880), Félix Bracquemond exhibited his final preparatory drawing in charcoal for his etched portrait of the great connoisseur Edmond de Goncourt. A far cry from the aesthetic of "painting quickly" associated with the Impressionists, Bracquemond's detailed and finely wrought portrait harkens back to the manner of northern Renaissance artists like Hans Holbein the Younger.
