Descent from the Cross by Torchlight

Conceived on the scale of a painting, this print illustrates Christ's death on the Cross, when darkness descended on Earth. A standard biblical subject, it had never been depicted with such graphic intensity or raw expressive force. The plate is entirely executed with drypoint, gouged into the copper with a sharp point. Rembrandt's heavy inking of the plate adds to the feeling that a dark curtain of despair is falling on the chaos below.
