Darning sampler
1721
This darning samplers was a practice piece intended to teach mending techniques for repairing domestic furnishings. In samplers such as these, needle workers simulated different fabric weaves through embroidery. In the most complex examples, such as this one, small areas of the fabric were cut out and the holes filled with darned patterns.
