Dark Cake
1983
Artwork Viewer
Despite its distinctly American subject, this woodcut of a cherry-topped chocolate cake was produced in Japan. Wayne Thiebaud made the print using traditional ukiyo-e printing techniques during a residency hosted by Crown Point Press designed to pose contemporary artists new conceptual challenges and encourage collaboration between artists of Western and Eastern traditions. The sense of light and mock impasto—the latter a trademark of the artist’s paintings, achieved here in print—is a testament to the prowess of his associates, Reizo Monjyu, a master wood-carver, and Tadashi Toda, a third-generation master printer.
