Dance panel (yata)
20th century
Not on view
Dance panels (yata) are most often associated with the priestesses of the Yoruba deity, Orisa Osun. The paired panels worn during dance ceremonies are slung over the shoulders, with the straps crossing in the front and back and the panels resting on the hips. The interlaced motifs positioned in each corner of the dance panels represent the four cardinal points of the compass. These interlaces are Afro-Islamic emblems. Prevalent throughout Yoruba art, they symbolize eternal life, afterlife, and rebirth.
