Confetti
Not on view
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec received the commission for this poster from J. & E. Bella, a paper manufacturer in London that produced specialty items such as paper banners and confetti. Paper confetti was a relatively new invention in the late nineteenth century, replacing the rice, flower petals, leaves, or bits of plaster that had previously been tossed over a bride and groom at the conclusion of their wedding ceremony. The artist visualized the paper confetti using his famous crachis, or splatter technique. The hands that playfully throw confetti onto the female figure echo the artist’s act of splattering color onto the lithographic stone.
