Coffeepot
Artwork Viewer
This coffeepot is from Gorham's “art line” of decorative wares, which were produced in limited editions. Influenced by the international array of objects displayed at nineteenth-century world's fairs, this cross-cultural coffeepot blends a Turkish form with decorative motifs drawn from a book of Japanese prints. It thus reveals the fluidity of Orientalism in Aesthetic Movement decorative arts, which often emphasized foreign exoticism at the expense of cultural authenticity.
