Local officials in Glasgow hired photographer Thomas Annan to document the abysmal living conditions in the city's working class neighborhoods of the 1860s and '70s. In this image, Annan's lens focuses on a group of some twenty-five women and children crowded into a narrow alley replete with dirty, crumbling walls, tattered laundry hanging out to dry, and an open sewer.
