Christ Carrying the Cross
Artwork Viewer
At the center of an animated procession, Christ steps forward bearing the weight of a massive wooden cross. On a hill in the background, the narrative reaches its somber conclusion: the Crucifixion. The small size and trefoil shape of this exquisite painting may indicate it was once part of an altarpiece, perhaps depicting key events in the Virgin Mary’s life known as the Seven Sorrows, a popular subject for devotional contemplation around 1500. The cool palette is punctuated by contrasting reds and yellows more commonly seen in southern European art, suggesting the painter had contact with stylistic trends beyond the Netherlands.
