Bonne Bay, from the Newfoundland Series
Not on view
The Newfoundland Series of prints are variant configurations of Stella's Protractor paintings of 1969-1970. In the prints, Stella innovated with materials, scale, and composition that led to changes in their overall appearance. Fluorescent inks were incorporated to intensify color, and selective gloss-varnish overprints and screenprinted areas added textual variety. Also, in order to maintain a precision of line that would not be jeopardized by the stretching of paper during the lithographic printing, outlines surrounding the segmented shapes were screenprinted. These lines and the white interstices, which do not appear in the paintings, separate the color shapes thereby establishing tensions between the hard edges of the forms and the optical play of the colors. -KB, Hard Edge With its characteristic flat, unmodulated application of opaque color, the screenprint was an appropriate medium for translating into print the aesthetic of Stella's Protractor paintings of the 1960s. In Bonne Bay, screenprint was combined with lithography to add textural variety and maintain a precision of line. Hand-cut stencils were used for the gray-tan, tan, purple, and purple line screens.
