Banks of the Somme at Picquigny

Camille Corot was the most influential landscape painter
in mid-nineteenth-century France. He settled in the forest of Fontainebleau and
rooted his practice in plein-air
(open air) sketching, using the studies he made outdoors to devise studio works
like this one. The silvery light effects, celadon palette, and mood of quiet
reverie are all typical of Corot’s mature work, as is the red cap worn by the
fisherman drawing in his net: a signature bright touch to offset the
landscape’s muted colors.
