Aristide Bruant
Not on view
The performer and nightclub owner Aristide Bruant was one of Toulouse-Lautrec's first patrons. In this 1893 poster advertising "soon, at this theater, Aristide Bruant in his Cabaret," Toulouse-Lautrec presents a back view of Bruant's jaunty frame outfitted in his typical black costume with trademark broad-brimmed hat. The collar and sleeve of Bruant's red shirt is indicated by touches of watercolor. In the lower right corner, the artist's circular monogram appears in a form inspired by the seals found on Japanese woodblock prints, then all the rage among Parisian connoisseurs, not the least of whom was Toulouse-Lautrec himself.
