Araignée (Spider)
1887
Not on view
The renowned Symbolist artist Odilon Redon visited natural history museums and drew countless accurate studies of spiders, so he was certainly aware that the arachnid possesses eight legs. Nonetheless, in this lithograph he endowed his happy spider with ten, making evident the pleasure that he took in creating and bringing to life "improbable beings."
