Altar candlestick
early 16th century
Around 1500, collectors in Northern Italy developed a taste for bronze statuettes, reviving subject matter and casting techniques from Greek and Roman antiquity. Intended for an ecclesiastical setting, this candelabrum features six tiers of figures: goat-footed satyrs, Atlases, and caryatid women. Most of these figures are connected to statuettes created by the sculptor Severo da Ravenna. One puzzling exception: the female figures in the lowest register are based on a model by a later artist made after Severo’s death. The candelabrum thus testifies to his enduring popularity and to the posthumous continuation of his workshop, recasting and remixing his figural inventions.
