"All-arm All-arm" (Brawl Between Beggars)
ca. 1635
Not on view
Cornelis Bloemaert II's engraving reproduces a design by the Dutch painter and poet Adriaen van de Venne. The title, All-arm All-arm, derives from the legend "Al-arm!" inscribed on Van de Venne's original oil painting. While "alarm" has the same meaning in English, the Dutch word arm also signifies "poor," producing a double entendre ("alarm"/"entirely poor").
