A View on Hampstead Heath with Harrow in the Distance
1822
Artwork Viewer
From 1819 to 1826, John Constable summered at Hampstead,
then a rural enclave north of London. Hampstead’s open heath and ever-changing
skies enraptured the artist, who produced a celebrated series of cloud studies
there. This sketch captures the outer edge of Branch Hill Pond, with Harrow
Hill just visible in the deep, blue distance, but the picture’s real subject is
the dying light of a wind-swept sky. An inscription on the reverse indicates
that he painted the scene from life: “Sunday, August 25, 1822, after sunset.”
