Local Voices S3 E7: See Black Womxn

Duration : 34 minutes, 55 seconds

Hear from Angela Hennessy and Tahirah Rasheed, co-founders of the Bay Area artist collective See Black Womxn.

Through art and theory, See Black Womxn, are telling their own stories as well as their communities in order to recognize and affirm the beauty, diversity, and complexity of Black Womxn and their aesthetic traditions.

“See Black Womxn, Hear Black Womxn, Trust Black Womxn, Love Black Womxn, Protect Black Womxn, Pay Black Womxn”

See Black Womxn are a Bay Area collective of artists, activists, curators and writers raised on Black feminist theory. They are a platform for self-representation free from stereotypical tropes of Black Women countering narratives that undermine the expression of our diversity.

Angela Hennessy is an Oakland-based artist and Associate Professor at California College of the Arts where she teaches courses on visual and cultural narratives of death and contemporary art. Through writing, studio work, and performance, her practice questions assumptions about Death and the Dead themselves.

Tahirah Rasheed is an artrepreneur and co-founder of “Fresh Made Productions” (arts content promotion and production), and See Black Women. See Black Women is a new venture focusing on triumph over the twin parallels of invisibility and hypervisibility of black women through a magazine dedicated to elevating the work of black women, political campaigns, and events. As an internationally traveled Disc Jockey, former lab assistant, and published researcher, Tahirah lends her many talents and experiences to each venture in service of community.
