By Claudia Schmuckli, Wangechi Mutu, and Isaac Julien

Book jacket featuring textured sculpture with "Wangechu Mutu I Am Speaking, Are You Listening?" text

Wangechi Mutu (b. 1972) is a Kenyan American artist known for her thought-provoking collages, films, and sculptures. Her work synthesizes diverse traditions, histories, and mythologies into hybrid forms that underscore the complex nature of meaningful art making in the twenty-first century. The visually dazzling publication Wangechi Mutu: I Am Speaking, Are You Listening? accompanies a presentation of Mutu’s new work at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco, and also includes a greater selection from her landmark oeuvre. Featuring stunning images, a penetrating essay by curator Claudia Schmuckli, a lively conversation with fellow artist Isaac Julien, and a poetic piece by the artist herself, this book highlights the lyrical explorations of race, gender, and the intersection of human rights and environmental politics that are at the heart of Mutu’s esteemed career. It is the most comprehensive book on the artist to date.
