Richard Diebenkorn: The Berkeley Years, 1953–1966
de Young \ June 22–September 29, 2013
This exhibition is the first to focus specifically on this fertile period for the artist. Over 130 paintings and drawings assembled from collections across the country, many of them rarely or never before seen in public exhibitions will illuminate Diebenkorn’s artistic evolution during what is now known as the “Berkeley period.” More information here.

The Errand of the Eye: Photographs by Rose Mandel

From the late 1940s through the early 1970s, Rose Mandel produced an original and evocative body of photographs, working closely with and among many of the Bay Area’s best-known artists including photographers Ansel Adams and Minor White and painters Richard Diebenkorn and Elmer Bischoff. The de Young hosts Mandel’s first retrospective exhibition illuminating her rightful place in the history of modernist photography. More information here.

The Art of Bulgari: La Dolce Vita & Beyond, 1950–1990

The Art of Bulgari: La Dolce Vita & Beyond, 1950–1990 presents approximately 150 show-stopping pieces from this era, along with sketches and other materials from the Bulgari archives. The exhibition takes a decade-by-decade look at Bulgari’s innovations in jewelry design with a particular focus on important American clients and on several striking pieces from the Elizabeth Taylor collection. The de Young is the first American museum to exhibit Bulgari jewels. More information here.

David Hockney: A Bigger Exhibition

Appearing only at the de Young Museum, this exhibition is the first comprehensive retrospective of Hockney’s work from 2002 to the present day, one of the most prolific decades of his career. Bright landscapes created on iPads, digital films that track the changing seasons, and massive oil paintings, all display Hockney’s unmatched curiosity and openness to innovation. Celebrating the Bay Area’s long-standing enthusiasm for Henri Matisse, this exhibition—displaying a selection of 23 paintings and sculptures from SFMOMA’s internationally acclaimed collection of the work of Henri Matisse, alongside four of the artist’s important paintings and drawings from the collections of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco— explores four decades of the artist’s career. The Bay Bridge: A Work in Progress, 1934‒1936

Celebrating the completion of the new eastern span of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, this exhibition presents a newly acquired group of photographs by Peter Stackpole (1913–1997) documenting the bridge’s original construction in the 1930s—the first works by this important Bay Area photographer to enter the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s collection. Modern Nature: Georgia O’Keeffe and Lake George

About the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco
The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, comprising the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park and the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park, is the largest public arts institution in San Francisco.

The de Young is housed in a copper-clad landmark building designed by Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron. It showcases the institution’s significant collections of American painting, sculpture, and decorative arts from the 17th to the 21st centuries; art from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas; a diverse collection of costumes and textiles; and international contemporary art.

The Legion of Honor’s Beaux-Arts style building designed by George Applegarth is located on a bluff overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge. Its collections span 4,000 years and include European paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts; ancient art from the Mediterranean basin; and the largest collection of works on paper in the American West.
