Contemporary Support Council members and special guests are invited to a private visit to artist Rashaad Newsome’s Oakland studio.

Join us for a private studio visit with Rashaad Newsome, a prominent American artist whose multidisciplinary practice encompasses collage, sculpture, film and video, animation, photography, music, writing, computer programming, software engineering, and community organizing. We recently acquired Newsome’s work thanks to the 2022 Svane Family Foundation gift of 42 works by 30 local artists. Light bites and refreshments will be provided during the visit.

About the artist

Born in New Orleans in 1979, Newsome holds a 2023 doctoral degree in fine arts from the University of Connecticut, a 2005 certificate of study in MAX/MSP programming from Harvestworks Digital Media Art Center, and a 2001 BFA in art history from Tulane University. Newsome’s work walks the tightrope between social practice and abstraction and highlights the immaterial and material expressivity related to Black American life. Rashaad’s work has been presented at renowned institutions such as the Studio Museum in Harlem, SFMOMA, New Orleans Museum of Art, Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), and Hayward Gallery (London). Through his practice, Newsome elicits dialogue, pushes boundaries, and sheds light on the complex intersections of race, capitalism, gender, and culture in contemporary society.
