U.S.A. Bonds: Weapons for Liberty
Not on view
Members of the Boy Scouts of America were adept at securing hundreds of thousands of war bond subscriptions. In honor of their patriotic efforts, the Treasury Department commissioned this poster, which features the Statue of Liberty transformed from a peaceable symbol of egalitarian virtue to a militant ready to safeguard democracy and liberty on the home front. Armed with a shield bearing the seal of the United States, she reaches for the boy's sword, which bears the Boy Scouts motto "Be Prepared," meaning "you are always in a state of readiness in mind and body to do your duty."
