The Pancake Woman
1635
Not on view
Rembrandt's The Pancake Woman depicts a type of outdoor food vendor particularly associated with the peasant population. Pancakes were considered a treat for children of the lower classes, and occasionally had malevolent connotations as a food prohibited during Lent. Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, was also known as "Pancake Tuesday," when a household's butter, eggs, and milk products had to be consumed so they would not go to waste during the fast.
