This print is a rendition of a subject Rembrandt visited often: the Christian gospel story of the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, and the infant Jesus’s flight into Egypt. After acquiring a copper plate showing the biblical scene of Tobias and the angel by the innovative printmaker Hercules Seghers, Rembrandt reworked the upper right half of the plate, replacing the two figures with the Holy Family and slightly altering the background. This creative act was one of both collaborative admiration and competition, representing Rembrandt’s esteem for his predecessor and his artistic lineage while asserting his own proficiency and innovation. Upon close inspection, Tobias’s wings are still faintly visible in the upper right corner.
