The Flight into Egypt (altered from Hercules Seghers)
ca. 1653
Not on view
This work represents one of the most fascinating examples of artistic appropriation in Rembrandt's etched oeuvre. Rembrandt owned a number of Hercules Segers's paintings and at some point acquired the artist's original copper plate dating from 1620 that depicted Tobias and the Angel (a work that, in turn, appropriated figures from an engraving by Hendrik Goudt). Perhaps as an experiment, Rembrandt burnished out Seghers's figures, replacing them with the Holy Family on their flight into Egypt.
