The Death of the Virgin
1639
Not on view
The largest and most ambitious of Rembrandt's etchings of Roman Catholic subjects, this print borrows heavily from traditional representations of Mary's death by earlier masters such as Albrecht Dürer and Lucas van Leyden. But Rembrandt toned down the Catholic symbolism and iconography, and broke from the tradition of showing a youthful Virgin on her deathbed, depicting her more realistically as an unconscious old woman.
