Ukiyo-e printers occasionally emphasized the materiality of their process, incorporating the wood grain from the printing blocks into the finished print. Called mokumezuri (wood-grain effect), this process was usually reserved for areas that called for monochrome or gradated color, often skies and water, resulting in decorative effect.
