Gustave Flaubert was one of Odilon Redon's literary idols. Between 1888 and 1896 he produced three albums of macabre lithographs based on Flaubert's prose poem La tentation de Saint-Antoine (The Temptation of Saint Anthony). In this provocative image, Redon combines extremes of beauty and ugliness, life and death.
