Eve
2006
Not on view
In this series, Wangechi Mutu examines the unjust representation of the biblical Eve—characterized by men throughout history as a transgressive temptress and the source of original sin—and of women in modern media. Mutu is interested in the ways gender and technology overlap, particularly in the use of women’ bodies to sell products in advertisements. The motif of the motorbike suggests the mechanization of the female body, while expressly female symbols, such as the shell and pearls, celebrate womanhood and female anatomy. Such surreal formations present a reimagined female figure that prompts viewers to envision new and expansive possibilities for representations of women.
