Celia Birtwell, a London-based textile designer, was a subject in Hockney's prints in 1969. After Hockney settled in Los Angeles in the early 1970s, Celia became a visitor to the city on a fairly regular basis and Hockney often celebrated his friend's arrival by drawing her lithograph portrait in his studio at Gemini, the print publishing workshop, which was then located at 8365 Melrose Ave. The print on the wall in the background is Hockney's Snow from the Weather Series, also from 1973.
