Cardbird I, from the Cardbird Series
1971
Not on view
Each of the seven collages in the Cardbird Series is composed of similar boxlike elements and some are more birdlike than others. Rauschenberg used found cardboard boxes to construct prototypes for this series. These prototypes were taken apart and materials for the editions were then fabricated according to the artist's specifications. Each label, each piece of tape, and each smudge of dirt was carefully printed to replicate the found box from which it derived. The use of screenprint in this fine-art process additionally replicates its original commercial functions.
