Barn Owl, from The Birds of America
1833
Not on view
In the early nineteenth century John James Audubon embarked on an ambitious plan to represent every North American bird. Though he eventually ran out of resources, the artist succeeded in making 435 life-size paintings of more than one thousand birds. These paintings served as the basis for the Birds of America series of engravings, which were printed on the largest sheets of paper available at the time.
