A new, free art day with local artists and community partners, in support of the SFUSD Equity School Partnership Project

SAN FRANCISCO—The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco are proud to announce de Youngsters Day Out, a new, free community day at the museum for all Bay Area families. Turning the museum into an art extravaganza for kids, fun-filled activities will take over every corner, from the African art galleries to the museum’s communal spaces and front lawn. Designed to spark curiosity and empowerment through art, entertainment, and more, de Youngsters Day Out is a fully accessible program. The event, as well as admission to the museum’s permanent-collection and special-exhibition galleries, is free of charge for all who participate.

“We are thrilled to introduce de Youngsters Day Out. This free all-day event brings to life our mission of inclusivity and will transform the de Young museum into a space of curiosity for all Bay Area families,” states Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. “In a complete reimagining of our fundraising program, de Youngsters Day Out allows us to reach even more Bay Area families as we continue to share the power of art with our community, while also raising crucial funds for our ongoing Free Saturdays family programs at the de Young and our year-round educational partnerships with Bay Area schools and community organizations.”

The all-day de Youngsters Day Out is an in-person event that will include seven different hands-on art-making activities led by Fine Arts Museums teaching artists. The program includes collaborations with Bay Area contemporary artists Ranu Mukherjee and Yétúndé Olagbaju, who will provide engaging activations interpreting the museum’s permanent collection and special exhibitions. In-gallery conversations and activations throughout the museum will be led by community partners. In addition, community partners Cuicacalli, Mariachi Juvenil La Mision, and Hip Hop for Change will provide on-site entertainment in the de Young’s Wilsey Court throughout the day. Bay Area-based online affordable eyewear retailer Zenniwith UC Berkeley School of Optometry will provide free on-site vision screenings for kids age 3+ to determine whether they might need glasses or vision treatment.

“Expanding upon the great success of last year’s community-driven format, this year’s de Youngsters Day Out reflects the vibrant curiosity of the Bay Area,” says Sheila Pressley, Director of Education at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. “With an incredible array of activities developed by our museum teaching artists, community partners, and special collaborations with Bay Area artists, this event is sure to inspire the next generation of art lovers and museum enthusiasts.”

Proceeds from de Youngsters Day Out will continue to support our Equity School Partnership Project with the San Francisco Unified School District. The project provides in-classroom instructional support, art supplies, and transportation for students who do not typically visit the de Young or Legion of Honor, as well as museum partnerships with community-based organizations serving students who are Black, Indigenous, or people of color. This year’s event showcases a creativity-filled overview of these programs and the social outreach and impact that we are dedicated to implementing. The San Francisco Unified School District schools include Malcolm X Academy Elementary School (Bayview), César Chávez Elementary School (Mission District), Dr. Charles R. Drew College Preparatory Academy (Portola Place), and Longfellow Elementary School (Oceanview), as well as Greenleaf Elementary School in the Oakland Unified School District.

The de Youngsters Day Out Committee is chaired by Max Boyer Glynn and Mariana Gantus Wall. The Steering Committee includes Janet Barnes, Sharon Bell, Carol Bonnie, Kate Harbin Clammer, Wheeler Griffith, Holly Johnson Harris, Lynn Poole, and Heather Preston. The Grand Dame Grandparent is Diane B. Wilsey. Previously known as “de Youngsters Art Party,” the de Youngster fundraising events serve as the primary source of funding for family programs at the de Young and Legion of Honor museums.

Ticket Information
The event is free for all Bay Area families. Tickets for the museum’s special exhibition Patrick Kelly: Runway of Love will be available for free on a first-come, first-served basis on-site at the museum.

About the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco
The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, comprising the de Young in Golden Gate Park and the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park, are the largest public arts institution in San Francisco. The de Young originated from the 1894 California Midwinter International Exposition in Golden Gate Park and was established as the Memorial Museum in 1895. It was later renamed in honor of Michael H. de Young, who spearheaded its creation. The present copper-clad landmark building, designed by Herzog & de Meuron, opened in October 2005. It holds the institution’s significant collections of American painting, sculpture, and decorative arts from the 17th to the 21st centuries; arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas; costume and textile arts; and international modern and contemporary art.
