People’s Programs presents Tales of The Town — a film and art exhibit. The film captures the landscape and the people and their stories in a poetic tribute to generations of Black Oaklanders — both living and ancestors. The art exhibit uses different mediums to give an in-depth and personal look at the culture that has grown from nearly a century of Black life in the place affectionately dubbed “The Town.” The exhibit is curated by Abbas Muntaqim, Dariane Beamon, Delency Parham, and Carrie Lin.

  • Dariane Beamon, known as Dari B. the Artist, is a self-taught fine artist from Oakland. Her art chronicles her story and the stories of those around her while allowing the documentation and preservation of these experiences through creativity and expression. Found frequently in her signature collections are pieces highlighting the intricacies of Black women, that also use the nostalgia of flowers (in honor of her late great grandmother Ruby and great aunt Dorothy) as a metaphorical pathway. Dari B. continually pours herself into creating thought and emotion-provoking pieces, a process that serves as a form of healing, with the hope of incentivising viewers to welcome stillness for the emotions that arise.

He believes the New Afrikan identity is at the core of a new world for Black people in Amerikkka.

  • Carrie Lin is a musician and visual artist from San Francisco. In 2017, she graduated from the University of Southern California with a bachelor’s degree in architecture.
