Contemporary Support Council members and special guests are invited to the Lhola Amira: Facing the Future opening night preview, ceremony, and celebration.

Contemporary Support Council members and special guests are invited to the Lhola Amira: Facing the Future opening reception and ceremony on December 15, 2022. Welcome remarks will be given by Thomas P. Campbell, director and CEO, and Natasha Becker, curator of African art, followed by a welcoming ceremony in Wilsey Court by the artist Lhola Amira.

Keeping the tradition of love and humility alive, Amira has invited nine guests from the African American and Indigenous Native American communities for this special welcoming ceremony.

We encourage you to capture how the ceremony feels with your hearts, without the distraction of technology, eating, or drinking during the experience.

About the exhibition

Lhola Amira: Facing the Future considers healing and restorative interventions as aesthetic strategies in response to today’s troubling times. Intensely grounded in Indigenous African spiritual traditions, Lhola Amira’s work addresses past and present wounds, offering gestures toward healing. Designed to be accessible to all, Amira’s art is in dialogue with ancestor sculptures in the African art collection that serve as conduits between the spirit and human world.
