Since its dedication to the city of San Francisco on November 11, 1924, the Legion of Honor has welcomed locals and visitors alike with its world-class art collection and sweeping views of the Golden Gate. This year marks the museum’s 100th anniversary as part of the Bay Area’s vibrant cultural community. We are celebrating this momentous occasion with a yearlong series of special events and programs beginning in November 2024.
Join us for an opening weekend extravaganza and return throughout the year to explore a dynamic exhibition schedule, hear engaging stories about the art directly from curators through a new free audio tour and lecture series, and (re)acquaint yourself with beloved collection highlights and new gallery additions. Gifts of Art
In anticipation of the centennial, Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, initiated a call for 100 transformative gifts of art. Surpassing an initial goal of 100, we received over 2,000 gifts of art from more than 275 donors, reflecting the generous Bay Area spirit that built our collections more than a century ago.
Highlights include Bernard and Barbro Osher’s promised gift of 61 works by preeminent American artists; J. Alec and Gail Merriam’s gift of more than 140 works of Ancestral Maya art to the arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas department, making it one of the largest collections of ancient American art in the Western United States; and Kirk Edward Long’s gift of 1,600 Mannerist prints, the third largest single-owner donation of works on paper to the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts in its history.
